📖 About This Book
Henry Ambrose Oldfield served as a surgeon at the British Residency in Kathmandu from 1850 to 1863, during the early years of the reign of Jang Bahadur Rana. Most previous Nepali art was religious art, but Oldfield's drawings and water- colours are of military and secular subjects as well and as such provide important information on Nepal's army and the architecture of the Kathmandu valley at that time. His work was so accurate that it has helped to guide some recent restoration projects. The Book is second volume of Sketches from Nepal. The book contains lively accounts of many varied aspects of this country. It has eight chapters that describe: Early History of Buddhism in India, Buddhism in Nipal, Principles of Buddhism, Present State of Buddhism in Nipal, Objects of Buddhist Worship, Buddhist Temples, Vihars (Monasteries) and Religious Festivals. This set is a reprint of the 1880 edition.
